Is bluetooth technology really capable of properly tracking infected people?

Apple and Google surprised the world by announcing that they would co-develop “contact tracing” technology to co-op Corona 19 on October 10 (local time).

This is the first time that Apple and Google, who are leading the iOS and Android ecosystems, are co-ordinating.

The two companies are jointly developing technologies that use Bluetooth to track user information. The two companies plan to release an API containing these contents together by mid-May.

■ “Retroactive application is also possible… If you choose to opt-in, you will be provided with contact information within 14 days”

In this regard, Duverge pointed out that there are three main aspects of using API technology to track contact sitr if infected.

First. How much users will download the app.

Second. How accurately can Bluetooth technology track infected people?

Third. Can automatic tracking using apps (or operating systems) replace the hand-work of professionals?

The issue of user adoption is the most important aspect of pan-matic tracking, such as Corona 19.

The action by Apple and Google consists of two phases. The first step is a joint API presentation. The two companies plan to release the relevant APIs by mid-May.

Organizations, including the World Health Organization, can use this API to implement contact tracking services. For the first time ever, android and iPhone are compatible.

At this stage, however, there is a problem with the need to download the app. It’s not as simple as you might think.

Apple and Google plan to incorporate the relevant features into the operating system in phase 2. In this case, when you update the operating system, the relevant features are automatically applied to the smartphone.

According to Duverge, at this stage, my smartphone sends a Bluetooth signal to another nearby smartphone. Similarly, it also has the ability to record signals from other phones.

At this time, it is also possible to apply retroactively. If you agree to apply the contact tracking feature, you will also be provided with contact-related information for the last 14 days, Duverge said.

Of course, because it is an opt-in method, users must agree to apply contact tracking. In the end, the question is how much the users will agree with.

■ Bluetooth recognition path vs. social distance difference identification is important

So how reliable is the Bluetooth signal? Duverge delved deeper into this.

A powerful Bluetooth signal affects about 9 meters. Health authorities, on the other hand, are advising that they do not contact corona 19 within two meters.

Therefore, there is a risk of “over-tracking” when using Bluetooth technology. This is because it is possible to “track contact” to positive responders within the range of bluetooth signals detected, even though they were more than two meters away from the medical staff’s recommendations.

This can lead to confusion due to the diagnosis of “false positive judge contact”. Therefore, it is important to solve this problem in order to properly track contacts.

Apple is also working to resolve the issue, According to Duverge.

To solve this problem, Apple is considering adding a “five-minute continuous contact” feature to the official health authority’s app. It is believed that it is unlikely that in that time, the person who is wrongly infected will be diagnosed on the street.

So can automated apps completely replace the efforts of health care officials?

This question was raised as soon as Apple and Google announced a joint API development plan. The criticism was that Silicon Valley tech companies were overly reliant on unproven software.

In fact, in countries where health authorities, including South Korea, are moving swiftly, they are rapidly responding to the spread of Corona 19.

On the other hand, it is worth pointing out that it is insufficient for only one person to cope with the pan-devil phenomenon, which is fast-paced, such as Corona 19. In the end, apple and Google’s attempts to fill the void are not bad.
